The summertime is a great time to get away and plan a vacation, anywhere in the world. However, in recent months, with the cost of living starting to bite, more people that ever are looking to save money during the summer months and so, a staycation for those in the UK, is a great option, with Cumbria and the areas around the Lake District an ideal place to holiday this year.
Best For Hiking – The Mortal Man Lake District
The Mortal Man in the Lake District is a fantastic classic inn that is located in the hills near Windermere. It is known for its cosy furnishings, homely rooms and an excellent beer garden.
There has been a pub at this location since 1689 and it has been said that Lakeland poets loved coming here. There are many walks available nearby including the walk over Wansfell Pike that goes through Skelghyll Wood and then all the way down to Windermere’s shoreline.
Best For Lake Views – Storrs Hall Hotel
The Storrs Hall Hotel is set in huge secluded grounds right on Lake Windermere. It is a Grade 2 listed Georgian and Victorian building and has accommodation across the main house, the boathouse (with it’s own hot tub, steam room and firepit) and it also has a number of lakeside suites.
The lakeside suits make you fully immersed in nature with sliding glass walls and private terraces that open right into the outdoors. The food is exceptional and you can have afternoon tea in the drawing room of the main house or classic pub faire in the Tower Bar.
The Lake District is known for its incredible views of the local area and finding a hotel with a view shouldn’t be a problem. Our favourite in the area is The Buttermere Court Hotel which has sweeping lake and mountain views all around it. Perfect to start a hike but also retire in the evening for a drink or meal in their restaurant.
If you’re coming to the Lake District and you want to stay for a longer time (6 months plus) then you should probably look for a serviced or furnished apartment. It will work out cheaper than staying in a hotel for the whole time but you’ll still get the amenities and luxuries of a hotel including housekeeping and a concierge service.
One of the best serviced apartments in the area is Maritime Apartments which is in Barrow-in-Furness. It is uniquely situated for work trips near BAE systems and the Ordsted wind farms but also close enough to the mountains for hiking after work.
The Samling Hotel in Windermere offers unrivalled views of Lake Windermere and you can enjoy a beautiful Michelin starred meal on the terrace when the weather is nice. It has incredibly peaceful surroundings and has its own land where you can walk in whenever you like. It also works if you want to go hiking in the morning and relax in the afternoon – it’s up to you.
The Lake District not only has great walking and hiking but has great golf too. The Derwentwater Hotel is located just 3.2km from Keswick – a beautiful market town near Skiddaw. There are some great courses within driving distance but they also have their own golf course on their own 18 acres where you can also enjoy walking and cycling.
