The Best Motorbike Routes in the UK

Dartmoor, Devon, UK

The first thing you’ll notice about the South West when you get off the M5, is the scenery. Thousands of square miles of rolling hills, forests and coastline as far as you can see. Criss-crossing all over the beautiful landscapes are an abundance of fantastic A roads, B roads, country lanes, and even trails if you feel up to the challenge. Whether you want the smoothest, sweeping tarmac available, or the roughest, muddiest dirt track, South West England has got you covered. One road in particular is the B3212 which cuts straight through Dartmoor National Park. The road has a beautiful mix of stunning views, long straights and twisty roads. Along the route, you’ll pass the highest pub in Southern England, the Warren House Inn, where the fire has been continuously burning since 1845. Perfect for a spot of lunch. You can turn the route into a circular by turning down to Bovery Tracey from Moretonhampstead and then up through Widecombe in the Moor and back towards Princetown. The route will take you past some beautiful old churches and villages tucked in between the looming Tors scattered about the moor.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

gray asphalt road beside mountain surrounded by green leafed trees during daytime

Widely regarded as one of the, if not, the best motorcycling roads in the world. At 243km, Australia’s Great Ocean Road isn’t the longest route in the world but certainly packs in everything you could possibly want out of a ride. Obviously, most of the scenery is coastal and there is no shortage of stunning ocean views, from small secluded beach fronts, to the high cliff edges about the magnificent Twelve Apostles. But the route will also take you through beautiful forests with some of the tallest trees you’ll ever see, and a few National Parks with tall waterfalls and diverse wildlife, including Koalas and Emus. If you fancy something different, you can visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse which is the setting for Australia’s most famous UFO encounter.

Japan

Japan’s spectacular, rugged coastlines, mountainous interiors and Kill-Bill-style metropolitan scenes are almost 100% perfect in terms of road conditions and overall infrastructure. Japan has one of the most outstanding road systems in the world: think super smooth, lots of perfect tunnels (and old-world tunnels, if history is your thing), world-class bridges, and hardly anyone around if you plan well.

It’s also very easy to get from Norway to other countries in Scandinavia, like Sweden and Finland, so if you want to tour the entire area and take in the surroundings then it’s a great place to head. The roads are generally well looked after too, so the ride will be pretty smooth and hassle free.
