The Dos and Don’ts of Rehydrating Freeze Dried Meat

Toughing out the rain, heat, or snow of the wilderness for days or weeks at a time can quickly become grueling, especially if you don’t have the right fuel for your body. Meat contains one of the main sources of energy our body needs: protein. Unfortunately, meat isn’t generally travel-friendly, but luckily, freeze-dried meat is. Here are the dos and don’ts of rehydrating freeze-dried meat so you can stay full and satisfied while roughing it.

Note: Whether you’re buying in bulk or making your own, freeze-dried meat can stay fresh for up to 30 years if kept at an optimum temperature of 75˚F.

Don’t: Rehydrate in Hot Water

Whether your freeze-dried meat is precooked or not, the last thing you want is to rehydrate your meat in hot water. While this will technically rehydrate the meat, it will begin to cook it. This will make it hard to tell if your raw, freeze-dried meat is overcooked and make your precooked freeze-dried meat tough.

Do: Rehydrate in Marinades

Even if you don’t rehydrate your meat in hot water, you can still rehydrate it in a marinade. Using hot water means your meat will taste bland, and if you do cook it, it’ll be harder for the meat to absorb flavor. While this may not matter to some in a survival situation, it should matter if you want to ensure that your food tastes good.

For portability’s sake, some bouillon cubes mixed with water make a quick and travel-sized marinade for any outdoor or survival situation.

Don’t: Recook

This rule applies only if your meat has been precooked. Of course, you can reheat your precooked freeze-dried if you want a warm meal, but you don’t want to cook it like you would with other meat. Not only will this make your meat tough as leather, but you’ll also rid your meat of some of its valuable nutrients.

Do: Add Spices

Besides your marinade, there are plenty of spices you can add to your rehydrated food to make it taste better. While you can eat precooked freeze-dried meat on its own, it just doesn’t taste good, and you may not be able to get it down. Nutrition and fuel are the most important; you want to be able to swallow your food, so making it taste better can be the best way to get the fuel your body needs to stay energized.

Now that you know the dos and don’ts of rehydrating freeze-dried meat, you can get proper nutrition anywhere, on any terrain.
